Given its multidisciplinary nature, the IH carries out studies that enable the analysis of bathymetric evolution of the seabed, combining an understanding of sea state phenomena and current patterns that affect sediment dynamics and material accumulation in the area under study.

In support of maritime works, IH has the capacity to contribute with:

• Hydrographic and topographic surveys and provide bathymetric models of the seabed, specific hydrographic products and seabed profiles;
• Studies and opinions on safety and maritime signalling;
• Calculation of harmonic constituents and tide forecasts for ports;
• Environmental characterisation and monitoring studies;
• Characterisation of sea state in the surrounding coastal area, using wave recorder buoys, as well as characterisation of the tidal regime and local conditions, using appropriate sensors and instrumentation;
• Characterisation of the circulation regime in the coastal area surrounding the maritime works using acoustic current profilers (ADCP);
• Inspection of maritime structures using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs);
• Surveys of the sediment layer and sub-surface layers;
• Assist in dredging works through hydrographic surveys to monitor dredging, calculate the volume of dredged material, collect and analyse physical-chemical data, and classify the material in accordance with current legislation;
• Support in situations involving the shipwreck detections or maritime accidents.
