Quality Management System

The Hydrographic Institute (IH) maintains a firm commitment to quality, scientific rigour and continuous improvement of its products and services. This commitment is supported by a consolidated Quality Management System in full compliance with the requirements of NP EN ISO 9001:2015 and NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standards.

NP EN ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Since 2007, the IH's Quality Management System has been certified and recognised by an independent external body, in accordance with the NP EN ISO 9001:2015 standard. It has been implemented in the gathering of topo-hydrographic and oceanographic data and the management, validation and dissemination of that information, production of nautical documents and services concerning the safety of navigation.

This certification confirms IH's capability, in fulfilling its mission, to develop and provide high-quality products and services, responding consistently and effectively to the needs of its stakeholders.

NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 Accreditation

Since 2011, the IH laboratories have been accredited by the Portuguese Institute of Accreditation (IPAC), in accordance with the NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standard.

This accreditation confirms the IH's technical competence to perform tests and calibrations with accuracy, impartiality and reliability, covering the following laboratories:

  • Laboratory of Marine Chemistry and Pollution;
  • Laboratory of Sedimentology;
  • Laboratory of Calibration.

Designated Institute in Inorganic Chemistry Metrology

The Laboratory of Marine Chemistry and Pollution (IH-LQPM) has been designated by Instituto Português da Qualilade (IPQ) as the Designated Institute in the field of Inorganic Chemistry Metrology. This designation, internationally recognised by the BIPM and EURAMET since 2019, covers the parameters:

  • Silica in seawater
  • Mercury in sediments

This status reinforces the IH position as a national reference in chemical metrology applied to the marine environment, consolidating its scientific and institutional relevance at national and international levels.
