Services

In order to continue its mission, the Instituto Hidrográfico (IH) has specialized teams and accredited laboratory capacity to carry out the main analyses necessary for the characterisation of the marine environment.

Analysis of the Division of Chemistry and Pollution of the Marine Environment

The IH has laboratory capacity for carrying out various types of chemical analyses in seawater samples, sediments and living organisms, carried out at the Laboratory of Chemistry and Pollution of the Marine Environment, such as:

Division of Marine Geology

The Marine Geology Division, in its sedimentology laboratory, has the necessary resources to receive, process, and analyze all sediment samples collected as part of projects and studies for the characterization and monitoring of the evolution of the marine environment.

Calibration

There are several calibration tests available in the Oceanography and Hydrography area, namely:

Hydrostatic pressure (test accredited by NP EN ISO/IEC 17025):

  • Test performed with hydraulic manometric scale;
  • Pressure exerted on the oil compression sensor;
  • Range from 1 bar to 600 bar, in relative and absolute pressure.

Temperature:

  • Calibration bath test with sea water and temperature control;
  • Comparison with 25 platinum resistance thermometer
  • Range from 0oC to 30oC of EIT90.

Electric conductivity of sea water by temperature variation:

  • Test performed in seawater bath with temperature control (high temperature for low temperature);
  • Collection of water samples from the bath stabilized, determining Salinity with the AUTOSAL Salinometer, and the Temperature with a platinum resistance thermometer of 25 μ;
  • The reference conductivity is calculated from Salinity (PSS-78) and Temperature (IPTS68);
  • Range from 30 mS/cm to 60 mS/cm.

Electric conductivity of sea water by variation of Salinity:

  • Test performed in 5 baths at room temperature, with water at various Salinity values;
  • Collection of water samples from the bath stabilized, determining Salinity with the AUTOSAL Salinometer and Temperature with a platinum resistance thermometer of 25 μ;
  • The reference conductivity is calculated from Salinity (PSS-78) and Temperature (IPTS68);
  • Range of 0 mS/cm at 60 mS/cm.

These tests allow to calibrate different types of equipment and sensors, for example:

  • CTD - General Oceanics, Seabird, Idronaut, FSI;
  • SVP – AML, Valeport;
  • Aanderaa - SmPC 4, 7, 9, 11;
  • AADI intelligent sensors - Temperature, Conductivity and Pressure;
  • RBR sensors - TDR 205;

It is possible to calibrate other hydro-oceanographic equipment, being the same dependent on obtaining possible adaptors for connection to laboratory equipment (in the case of pressure sensors) and prior equipment analysis.
