Safety of Navigation
Each state shall take the necessary measures to ensure that, whenever it becomes aware of any danger from a safe source, it is promptly disclosed to all parties concerned and to other States concerned. (SOLAS - Chapter V - Safety of navigation).
The NAVTEX system is a service for automatic broadcasting and reception of maritime safety information, by means of telegraphy, by direct printing in narrowband.
It diffuses ANAV, weather information and other information needed for navigation security, considering that each station has a coverage area with a radius of 400 miles.
The Portuguese system of NAVTEX for the diffusion of coastal ANAVs is assigned to the Navy and the transmission to its areas of responsibility is made from the Center for Data Communications and Marine Science (CENCOMAR), the Centro de Comunicações dos Açores (CENCOMARACORES) and the Centro de Comunicações da Madeira (POSTRADMADEIRA), both in English at the frequency in MF (518 kHz), and in Portuguese at the frequency in MF (490kHz).
