Standard S-100
S-124 is the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) new format for providing Navigational Warnings in a digital way, integrated into onboard systems (for example, ECDIS). It ensures the right information reaches the mariner at the right time, within the same environment used to view electronic navigational charts. S-124 is part of the IHO’s S-100 family, which harmonizes data exchange between systems and enables the next generation of digital navigation.
Key benefit
- Simplified access: navigation systems consolidate and automatically display relevant warnings, avoiding the need to consult multiple sources.
- Greater safety and efficiency: near real-time updates keep the mariner aware of what is happening along the route, supporting quicker, better-informed decisions.
What changes for mariners
Traditionally, navigational warnings were received by radio and consulted separately. With S-124, navigational warnings appear directly on the electronic chart in S-100-compliant ECDIS equipment, bringing together on a single screen the essential information for safe navigation.
Service availability
The Instituto Hidrográfico is currently producing S-124 navigational warnings and preparing their release in alignment with the international S-100 timeline.
