World Mar Day 2024

This Saturday, November 16, is the National Day of the Sea. The choice of this date dates back to the entry into force of the “UN Convention on the Law of the Sea”, on 16 November 1994, which Portugal ratified in 1997.

The purpose of this celebration is to highlight the importance of the sea for the history and identity of Portugal, as well as for its economy and development.

This theme is part of the DNA of the Hydrographic Institute (HI), whose mission and vision aim to contribute to the safety of navigation, ensuring activities related to the sciences and techniques of the sea, with application in the military area. The IH teams work to ensure knowledge of the waters of national interest, thus contributing to the country's development in scientific areas and in the defense of the maritime environment.

To mark the date, the Navy Museum organized a special program with educational activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem. Under the theme “The Oceans”, the smaller will discover the wealth of the oceans and their essential role for life on Earth. Participation in the activity also offers a free entrance to the Navy Museum.

Portugal is deeply attached to the sea, being recognized as the country of maritime discoveries. Celebrating the sea is also celebrating the history of Portugal and the Portuguese people.
