Work with participation of the Hydrographic Institute considered the most cited in 2022-2023

Under the PLATMAR project (PTDC/GEO-GEO/0051/2014), financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology and whose Principal Investigator was Rui Quartau (Hydrographic Institute/IDL), the sediments of the Santa Maria island platform were characterized as to their nature and size of the grain, which provided a unique opportunity to test the transport of sediments on the island platform of Santa Maria.

This work entitled “Wave-influenced deposition of carbonate-rich sediment on the island shelf of Santa Maria Island, Azores” was published in 2022 in Sedimentology magazine and was now considered one of the most cited works in 2022-2023.

It resulted from the work of an international multidisciplinary team, including the Hydrographic Institute, the University of the Azores, the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), the Dunarea University of Jos de Galati (Romania) and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. The first author of this work (Zhongwei Zhao) was a PhD student from Rui Quartau.
