Hydrographic Institute on Navy Day 2017

The 2017 Navy Day returns to the north of the country with the celebration of the date of the arrival of Vasco da Gama to Calecute in India on May 20, 1498, to be celebrated this year in Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, two locations markedly maritime and with great devotion to the sea.

Several activities of interest to the public will take place from 13 to 21 May.
The Hydrographic Institute, as an organ of the Navy and State Laboratory, will be present in Customs Regia, Vila do Conde, with an exhibition of activities that contribute to the pursuit of national interests and support in different areas of maritime activity.

This year the Navy also celebrates the 700 years of the royal diploma in which D. Dinis awarded the title of Admiral to Manuel Pessanha, on February 1, 1317. The contract established by the royal diploma mentioned determined the permanent organization of the Portuguese Armada, and the decisive document for Admiral Manuel Pessanha to lead the process that made the country a relevant naval power.
