Visit to the Spanish Navy Hydrographic Institute

As part of the cooperation between the Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the Spanish Hydrographic Institute of La Marina (IHM), a visit was made on 17 and 18 February to Cadiz. The IH delegation, headed by the Director-General, Rear Admiral Seabra de Melo, also joined the Technical Director and officers of the Hydrography Division.

In addition to the institutional visit, which allowed knowledge of the organization and activities of the IHM, a technical meeting was held to evaluate future collaborative actions in the area of hydrography, which already has two joint hydrographic surveys, where experiences were exchanged and compared working methods and procedures, in the context of the acquisition and processing of baptismal data.

This visit established the continuation of cooperation, particularly with regard to the determination of the differences between the altimetric references of the two countries, the realization of joint hydrographic surveys in areas of common interest, the sharing of data for production and cartographic update, as well as cooperation in other areas, such as operational oceanography.

This cooperation, which is an excellent example of collaboration between national hydrographic services, as proclaimed by the International Hydrographic Organization, has contributed to the development of their hydrographic capabilities, through the sharing of knowledge, procedures and information, with the optimization of available resources and the consequent reduction of costs.
