Visit by the Mayor of Nazaré to the IH

The Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute (IH), Rear Admiral Coelho Cândido, received on 14 October 2016 the Mayor of Nazaré, Dr. Walter Chicharro, accompanied by Dr. Carlos Filipe, Deputy of the President.

This work visit focused mainly on the oceanography area and aimed to exchange information on the new challenges that may be developed in the future, within the framework of the MONICAN project, which monitors, in real time, all the dynamics caused by the Cannon of Nazareth.

At the end of the visit, the Mayor of Nazareth, Dr. Walter Chicharro, expressed the following message in the Book of Honor:

“ A deep thanks for the fantastic partnership that the Hydrographic Institute daily fulfills with the Municipality of Nazareth.
As the highest representative of the people of Nazareth, I affirm the invaluable contribution of the IH to this wave of success that we live in today's village. The deepening of this partnership is the path, have and count on us. ”

Note: It is shown in one of the rooms of the Fort of the Interpretative Center of the Cannon of Nazareth, an exhibition of the Hydrographic Institute on this cannon and the new studies that will be developed in this context, which allows visitors to know the work done by this Institute.

“Nazaré Cannon is the largest underwater cannon on the Portuguese mainland and one of the largest on the European margin. Such a structure necessarily affects the various oceanographic processes that take place off the Portuguese west coast, promoting important impacts on the coastal zone, on the currents of the continental shelf or on marine ecosystems.
