Testimony of FOR-MAR participation in the IH activity

As part of the participation in the activity promoted by the Hydrographic Institute during the 9th Edition of Business2 Sea held between November 11th and 13th, at the Porto Customs Congress Center, we disclose here the testimony that was sent to us by FOR-MAR graduates who participated in this initiative.

"VISIT FROM STUDY TO THE DOUR RIO

On November 12, a group of seven trainees from the Marine Course CEF of the Centre for Vocational Training in Fisheries and the Sea (FOR-MAR) participated in an activity organized by the Hydrographic Institute, in the Douro River. The activity consisted of throwing a few balls/buoys into the river that inside contained a GPS and which allowed to verify its location through an application (meloa.inesctec.pt). The objective of this activity was to check the river current through the movement of the balls. The activity on the Douro river lasted about 30 minutes and during this period the vessel where they followed passed three bridges: the D. Luis bridge, the D. Maria bridge and the S. João bridge.

All the graduates liked the activity performed and learned something new.

Diogo Martins learned that the ship's commander has some kind of bracelet tied to his wrist, attached by a cable to the ignition of the boat. If, eventually, the commander falls in the water, the cable, which is called “Man at Sea”, shuts off the vessel and it stops.

Rafael Teixeira learned to throw the buoy overboard and follow it by GPS.

Hugo Arteiro learned to use QR CODE, a two-dimensional barcode that in this case could be converted into a georeferenced location.

Gonçalo Ferreira also learned to throw the ball and follow it by GPS and stressed how positive it was to see the use of technology associated with these situations, thanking him for participating in such a different initiative.

Micael Ferreira found the activity very interesting, having said that it was an incredible experience for having been on a speedboat, threw the buoy with GPS and followed his curious and intriguing journey.

The trainees thank the Hydrographic Institute for the opportunity it has given them because, in addition to having been one of the few experiences of this kind, without the support of your entity, they would not have acquired all the knowledge that this shipment has given them.
