Hydrographic Institute Senior Technician defends PhD Thesis
Catarina Rocha, Senior Technician at the Marine Environment Chemistry and Pollution Division of the Hydrographic Institute (HI), defended her PhD thesis last Friday, October 3, at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
Her thesis, entitled “Assessment and optimisation of uncertainty in identifying the origin of oil spills in the marine environment,” presents an innovative approach to evaluating the results of chemical analyses carried out on samples from marine oil pollution incidents, as well as to interpreting and presenting scientific evidence for legal purposes in determining responsibility for pollution events.
This work represents a significant contribution to strengthening the scientific and technical capacities of the Hydrographic Institute in the areas of marine environment protection and monitoring. It aligns with the Institute’s mission to promote ocean knowledge and sustainability, enriching both national and international research in marine science and technology.
The session was attended by the Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros, as well as colleagues from several IH divisions.
Congratulations, Catarina, on this remarkable achievement! The Hydrographic Institute celebrates your success and thanks you for your continued contribution to science and the ocean.
