Guadiana River: Electronic navigation cards available for free download on the IH page
The first nautical charts of the Guadiana Riverway series were produced by the Hydrographic Institute (IH), under the GUAD20 – Guadiana Project, Navigable Natural Heritage”, which ran from 2017 to 2021, in partnership with the Public Agency of Puertos of Andalusia (APPA - promoter entity) and the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM). The project co-financed by the Portugal-Spain Operational Programme for Transboundary Cooperation (POCTEP INTERREG V-A 2014-2020) finally restored the conditions deemed necessary for safe navigation on the international section of the Guadiana river between Vila Real de S.to António and Pomarão, as was the case between 1858 and 1965, when the river's funds allowed safe flow of the ore from the mines of São Domingos.
In the framework of the project, several hydrographic surveys were carried out by the IH in the entire international section and the physico-chemical characterisation of sediments between Alcoutim and Pomarão; DGRM streamlined the regularisation of funds in the assorting zones that were dangerous for navigation, and from the junction of all the bathimetric information with the updated hydrographic data in the intervention areas, it was possible to re-adjust and redefine the route of the navigation channel (Alcoutim to Pomarão) and to implement the respective marking through the placement of beacons, lights and targets; in turn, APPA carried out the construction and improvement of various port infrastructures existing in the international section. The project culminated in the publication of the folio of the river series for the Guadiana River, established and produced by the IH (entity responsible for the production of national nautical cartography).
Electronic letters of inland navigation (Inland) of the Guadiana Navigable Route are available on the IH page and can be downloaded free of charge on http://www.hydrographic.pt/cart.guadian.
