Recovery of Glider from the Canary Islands Ocean Platform

Last Wednesday, July 12, the Hydrographic Institute, with the support of the NRP Andromeda, recovered the glider (autonomous vehicle without own propulsion) of the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (PLOCAN) which had been launched in June as part of the collaboration between both institutions under the Eshed-iFado (Eddy Shedding monitoring off Setúbal Bay) mission of the IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere).

This equipment has been collecting autonomously data from the water column between the surface and the 1,000m deep for 28 days in the Setúbal underwater cannon, covering a total of about 260 nautical miles. These data of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and chlorophyll will join others acquired within the PAAnoremic mission of the iFado project.
