Representatives of Rutgers University and National Oceanography Centre visit the CIM
On December 5, representatives of the University of Rutgers, New Brunswick (USA), and the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (UK), visited the facilities of the Maritime Instrumentation Center, installed at the Seixal Hydrographic Base.
This visit aimed to explore the conditions existing in the IH for a partnership in the building and exploration of a GLIDERS Laboratory.
GLIDERS are autonomous submarine vehicles that travel in the ocean through changes in their buoyancy, “planning” along their route. With scientific instruments, these vehicles can acquire data on biogeochemical and physical parameters from the surface to great depths for very long periods and routes.
Thus, ocean observation can be performed with a great reduction in operational costs when compared to the traditional method of using ships and carrying out oceanographic cruises.
