Paintings by André Gonçalves return to the Convent of the Trines of Mocambo
Inserted in the context of the celebrations of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, the Hydrographic Institute carries out an Exhibition under the theme “André Gonçalves and the Cycle of Trinitarian Saints in the Convent of the Trinas of Mocambo”, through which it makes known a set of thirteen important paintings of the Portuguese Baroque, part of which exhibiting the magnificent frames in golden cut.
The works are written by the painter André Gonçalves and participated in the decoration of the church of Nossa Senhora da Soledade do Convento das Trinas do Mocambo, having in the thirties of the last century been removed from its place of origin and delivered to the Convent of Christ in Tomar.
The temporary return of these works to the place of origin is a cultural event of high historical significance because its withdrawal for the purpose of safeguarding occurred about eight decades ago, preserving only with permanent character the painting of the ceiling of the lower choir representing the coronation of the Virgin.
Also, in the context of these celebrations, the historian Dr. João Miguel Simões gives a lecture on the theme of the exhibition, which will take place on April 7, at 11 a.m., in the Auditorium Duarte Pacheco Pereira, of the Hydrographic Institute.
The exhibition is open to the public and can be visited on business days, from 8 to 30 April, between 10h and 12h30 and 14h and 16h.
From 8 to 30 April, guided tours to the conventional spaces will take place daily, requiring only prior marking for rp@hydrographico. pt.
