Portuguese Navy Officer will integrate research project in Antarctica
At the invitation of the Instituto Hydrográfico de la Marina (Spain), an official of the Instituto Hydrográfico da Marinha Portuguesa will participate in the GALILEO-IHM-3 Project, under the Antarctic Campaign 2017-2018.
The project will take place on board the Oceanographic research ship "Hesperides", between 18 February and 12 March 2018, with the objective of evaluating the European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Galileo, in the open and free mode of service of positioning and time diffusion in the Antarctic region and performing hydrographic surveys, within the framework of the Spanish cartographic plan.
In this sense, it is planned to carry out top-hydrographic surveys and observations GNSS Galileo in Punta Arenas (Chile), Ushuaia (Argentina) and in several locations of the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.
The shipment of this military on board the ship "Hesperides" comes within the framework of cooperation between the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute and the Spanish Hydrographic Institute, which has been fostered in recent years and aims at the mutual exchange of knowledge serving to improve the methodologies and procedures of both institutions, making them more modern and effective.
