The Hydrograph Engineer Course
The Hydrograph Engineer Course is one of the oldest engineering courses in Portugal since 1836.
Currently, the Hidrograph Engineer Course is an advanced training course in one of the specific areas of Hydrography or Oceanography identified as of interest by the Hydrographic Institute and consists, academically, in conducting a master's degree or doctorate in a higher education institution in Portugal or abroad and later in conducting an internship with the development of a project.
For the realization of the Course of Hydrograph Engineer students are usually selected, from among the Hydrographers who have held the Specialization Course in Hydrography, which is recognized by the International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartooners with category A, after a few years of experience.
Hydrograph engineers, after a few years of dedication to the specific area of their training, are usually assigned to occupy management and management positions at the Hydrographic Institute.
The latest Hydrograph Engineer, Lieutenant Captain EH Paulo Jorge Antunes Nunes received his badge and Course Letter on May 10, 2019. In the specific case of this course, the master's degree was developed at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in the area of Geographic Information Systems.
Currently the Portuguese Navy has two more hydrographers to conduct the course of hydrographer engineer, one at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the other at Naval Postgraduate School in the USA. Within the advanced training plan in Hydrography is also planned for next year a contest for a hydrograph engineer course with the master's degree to be developed at the University of New Hampshire, USA.
