Multiparametric buoy maintenance mission

The hydro-oceanographic ship D. Carlos I left today, April 12, from the Lisbon Naval Base to carry out, during the next month, the maintenance of the multiparametric buoys of the Integrated Environmental Monitoring System of the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone (MONIZEE). This system has a total of 5 buoys distributed along the national waters from north to south of Portugal, more specifically off Leixões, Nazaré, Cabo Espichel and Faro.

The maintenance of these buoys, performed periodically, is essential to maintain the proper functioning of sensors and the transmission of meteorological and oceanographic parameters in real time. The operation of collection and placement of the buoy, given its complexity, requires specialized means and teams and, therefore, are embarked on the NRP D. Carlos I a technical team of the Hydrographic Institute and two divers of the Portuguese Navy.

The ship is on mission until 14 May and during this period will also participate in the AQUIMAR project – General characterization of aquaculture areas for establishment of marine crops. This project aims to identify the places with the greatest aptitude for the practice of aquaculture and characterize the oceanographic, physicochemical, geochemical and biological conditions of the selected areas.
