Minister of the Sea visits the Hydrographic Institute

Professor Ricardo Serrão Santos, Minister of the Sea, today, June 16, visited the Hydrographic Institute (IH). It was received by the Chief of Staff of the Armada, Admiral António Mendes Calado and the Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares.

Admiral Mendes Calado expressed his great satisfaction at receiving one of his greatest practitioners in a sea science house, now also the protagonist in a place top of the national policy related to the sea. Then Rear Admiral Ventura Soares updated the Minister with regard to ongoing capabilities, resources and projects. The IH has unique capabilities in the country in the areas of Hydrography, Oceanography, Navigation, Marine Geology and Chemistry and Pollution of the Marine Environment. Among other areas of activity was the ocean monitoring network, unique at national level, which includes ocean buoys whose data are disclosed in real time to citizens through the portal www.hydrographic. en. These data are fundamental for the study of the Portuguese Sea and for the study of its behavior. During the visit to the headquarters building, in Rua das Trinas, there was still much interest in the works that aim to detail (map) the Portuguese seabed.

The visit also included the passage through the Azinheira Hydrographic Base in Seixal, an important logistical base for preparing and supporting missions at sea. It was possible to visit the Maritime Instrumentation Center, including the Laboratory of Calibration of Equipment, buoys and equipment used at sea.

At the end of the visit there was the conviction that synergies in the direction of studying the sea must be strengthened, so that our country can exploit it sustainably.
