Navy Military completes Hydrograph Engineer Course

At a ceremony held on February 22, 2023, in the auditorium D. João de Castro, the Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros, delivered the Letter of Hydrograph Engineer to 1TEN António Carlos Gonçalves Tavares.

On this occasion, the 1TEN Gonçalves Tavares presented two works carried out under the Course of Hydrograph Engineer (Ramo de Oceanography): a subject under the theme “Analisis of Surface Current Patterns to the Southwest of Lisbon using High-Frequency Radar Data”, which constituted his master's thesis in Oceanography Physics at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), in 2020; and another one with the theme “Creation and validation of surface current maps without faults of spatial coverage generated by high-frequency coastal radars, in the southern region of Portugal, using the open-boundary modal analysis (OMA) technique”, which corresponded to the Final Project for the Internship of the Hydrograph Engineer Course, developed at the Hydrographic Institute (HI), in 2021.

The studies presented demonstrated the relevance of the high frequency coastal radar network for the observation of coastal currents established and operated by the IH, and provided tools that can be used in various operational and scientific areas, such as support for marine search and rescue operations, or in response to spills of polluting substances in the marine environment.

1TEN Gonçalves Tavares currently serves as Head of the Oceanography Section at the Geospatial, Meteorological and Oceanographic Maritime Center.

The IH congratulates the 1TEN Gonçalves Tavares for having completed with distinction the Course of Hydrograph Engineer and wishes him all the best in his duties at the service of the IH and the Navy.
