Navy honored the 15 crew members of the Roberto Ivens Minebuster
On July 26, 1917, this ship was on a mission between Cape Roca and Cape Espichel and hit a mine that caused its sinking.
The mines had been dumped by a German submarine to stop access to the port of Lisbon. The wreckage of the ship was identified in February 2016, 9 miles to the SSW of the Bugio, in a hydrographic campaign carried out by the Hydrographic Institute and promoted by the Cultural Navy Commission, in collaboration with the Nova University of Lisbon, in the context of the centenary celebrations of Portugal's entry into the First World War.
The video shared here was presented during the Navy memorial ceremony and includes images of the wreckage of the ship obtained earlier this month by the Hydrographic Institute from the ROV (submarine vehicle operated remotely). Soon, we will release an explanatory film with images of the multibeam data obtained during the ship's identification campaign.
