Portuguese Navy Contributes to NATO Mission in Romania
Since 2022, Portugal has been participating in NATO’s enhanced vigilance mission in Romania, aiming to demonstrate the cohesion and determination of its members in protecting allied countries on the eastern and southern flanks of the Alliance.
The Portuguese National Detachment (FND) in Romania, a country bordering Ukraine, consists of a Mechanized Rifle Company and a Special Operations Force from the Army, also including personnel from other branches of the Armed Forces.
The Navy contributes to this mission by providing Meteorological and Oceanographic support for military activities on the ground through the Maritime Geospatial, Meteorological, and Oceanographic Center Division (CGEOMETOC) of the Hydrographic Institute, as well as by permanently assigning one of its members. Now in its 6th rotation, the mission has already included four members from this division.
In this context, after completing his 6.5-month mission (from May to December 2024) in Romania, SAJ A Rodrigues Pereira, representing the Commander of the 5th FND CAtMec/ROU, MAJ Inf Nélson Sousa, extended institutional greetings to the Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute, CALM Ramalho Marreiros, as a gesture of appreciation for the availability of human resources and the quality of the support provided, both of which were essential for the successful completion of the national mission.
