Talk “Look at Liós”
On December 12 the Hydrographic Institute held the lecture “Look at the Liós”.
In this lecture, presented by Professor Mário Cachão, of the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon was made known the genesis of liós, a limestone of ornamental application that was formed in the region of Lisbon about 90 million years ago.
Its application is widespread in the buildings of the Lisbon region, including the headquarters of the Hydrographic Institute.
The explanations related to the environmental conditions of height, the classification and morphological description of the bibalves, which fossilized and make up this rock, allowed the participants to interpret the forms displayed in their matrix during the recognition activity that took place in the cloisters of the building, after the presentation of the lecture.
Professor Mário Cachão, a geologist specializing in paleontology, has been promoting geological heritage in an urban context. The Hydrographic Institute was the first institution to welcome this awareness initiative dedicated to the importance of liós limestone and its elevation to the material heritage of the city of Lisbon.
