Following the IX Meeting between the Portuguese Navy and the Brazilian Navy, where it was agreed to exchange military personnel to exchange experiences and knowledge between the two Navys, Lieutenant Luis Carlos dos Santos Melo, with specialized training in hydrography and oceanography by the Hydrographic Institute, embarked on the Hydroceanographic Research Ship (NPqHo) Vital de Oliveira, of the Brazilian Navy, from 14 November to 6 December p.p., during the commission PIRATE BR 2017.
This mission aimed to study the ocean-atmosphere interactions in the Tropical Atlantic, under the international project “Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic”, which involves Brazil (INPE - National Institute of Space Research), the United States of America (PMEL/NOAA - Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and France (IFREMER - Institut Français de Recherche et d'Exploitation de la Mer).

During this boarding, where the operationality of 4 oceanographic buoys of the PIRATA network, founded in the northeast of Brazil, was restored, and where various scientific activities were developed, both in the oceanographic component and in the meteorological, by several Brazilian researchers, it was possible to compare work methodologies, exchange experiences in the field of marine and scientific research and know some of the most relevant projects in progress in Brazil.
