Hydrographic Institute participates in Academic Session on Marine Pollution

The Hydrographic Institute (IH) took part, on 4 November, in the Joint Academic Session of the Navy Academy and the University of Algarve, dedicated to the theme “Marine Environment Pollution”.
Senior Technician Catarina Rocha, from the IH’s Division of Chemistry and Marine Pollution, delivered a presentation entitled “From the ocean to the laboratory: the role of chemical analyses in identifying the source of petroleum product spills”.

Her presentation highlighted the essential role of the chemical analyses carried out by the IH, showcasing the methods used to identify the origin of such spills and how these results support the technical-scientific assistance provided to the National Maritime Authority in attributing legal responsibility for pollution-related offences.

This participation reinforces the Hydrographic Institute’s commitment to applied research and the protection of the marine environment, in close cooperation with national and academic entities.
