Hydrographic Institute hosts the 2025 Iberian Atlantic Margin Symposium
The Hydrographic Institute (IH) hosted the Iberian Atlantic Margin Symposium (MIA 2025) on 29 and 30 October, bringing together a wide community of geologists, chemists, oceanographers, modellers, and biologists from Portuguese and Spanish institutions dedicated to the study of this domain.
The meeting was marked by extensive scientific exchange and technical discussion. The programme included two keynote lectures: the first revisited the historical impact of the 1 November 1755 earthquake, which profoundly shaped the city of Lisbon and the development of Earth Sciences; the second highlighted the importance of data reuse and dissemination, as well as the production of modelling outputs and the characterization of coastal ocean ecosystems.
In addition to the scientific sessions, the symposium featured a post-event field trip to the Oeste Geopark, Nazaré, and Baleal, accompanied by geologists with in-depth knowledge of the visited sites. The activity was highly successful and greatly appreciated by participants.
The next edition of the MIA will take place at the University of Salamanca in 2028.
