Hydrographic Institute Participates in the Marine Robotics Summer School
The Hydrographic Institute is participating as a specialized training entity in gliders in the 5th edition of the Marine Robotics Summer School, taking place from July 7 to 18 on Faial Island, Azores.
The invitation was extended by the Azores School of the Sea (EMA), with the goal of supporting the operation of the region's glider — an autonomous platform essential for ocean monitoring.
This initiative is co-organized by the MIT Portugal Program (MIT), the Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory of FEUP, and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), in partnership with OKEANOS (University of the Azores), +ATLANTIC CoLAB, Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation, Instituto Superior Técnico, Portuguese Navy, IMAR, and sponsored by the Regional Government of the Azores.
The Summer School brings together 24 students, 12 from Portuguese universities (Master’s/PhD) and 12 from MIT (undergraduate/graduate), with interests in marine robotics, biology, ecology, and oceanography. The program combines lectures from professors from MIT and Portugal, hands-on workshops, fieldwork, and onboard sessions, providing a practical experience in oceanographic observation.
The presence of the Hydrographic Institute, providing technical and practical support for the glider operations in the Azores, reinforces its commitment to scientific research and the development of sustainable technologies for the monitoring and protection of our oceans.
