Hydrographic Institute distinguished in international competition

The Hydrographic Institute (HI) was distinguished with the first and third places in the Kongsberg Maritime Subsea Bathymetric Photo Contest, with images submitted by the Hydrographic Brigade. The competition took place between 1 December 2014 and 1 March 2015, with the 12 best images included in the Kongsberg 2016 calendar (the ones submitted by the IH illustrate the months of January and March).

The winning image consists of a perspective of the batimetric model obtained in the hydrographic survey of the Faro-Olhão bar, where the jetties and a fuse near the bar are visible, caused by the strong tide currents. The hydrographic survey was carried out at the end of 2014, with the acquisition of data performed by a Kongsberg multi-beam probe system EM2040C.

The image that obtained the third place is a perspective of the batimetric model obtained in the survey of the north bar of the port of Lisbon, carried out in mid-2014, also with the same system, and illustrates the morphology of the Atlantic margin near the Estoril coast line.
