Hydrographic Institute Collaborates with the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency
Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the IH deployed two Argo floats off the coast of mainland Portugal in 2024. The MoU aims to foster cooperation between the two institutions in the deployment of Argo floats in areas of interest within Portuguese marine waters.
The floats launched by the Hydrographic Institute are equipped with sensors that measure temperature, salinity, and pressure at depths of up to 2000 meters. The collected data is freely accessible and can be viewed at: https://fleetmonitoring.euro-argo.eu/
These floats contribute to the International Argo Program, integrating a network of over 4000 autonomous floats that continuously observe the global ocean.
With this initiative, the Hydrographic Institute is contributing to global ocean observation and monitoring efforts, helping to enhance our understanding and protection of the marine environment.
