IH participates in the workshop EMSO “On Sea Operation”

On 25 and 26 September the Hydrographic Institute (HI) participated in the workshop “On Sea Operation” of EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory) held in Toulon, France.

The IH was represented by the Oceanography Division with a presentation on the System of Monitoring and Operational Forecast of the Portuguese EEZ, MONIZEE (http://www.hydrographic. pt/iproject/3), its current operation and future developments. In this presentation we also mentioned the projects in which the IH is involved and which collaborate with MONIZEE as the SUB-ECO, JONAS, OCASO and Jerico-S3.

EMSO is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) that shares, in a common strategic structure, scientific facilities (data, instruments, computing and storage capacity) from which results a system of regional observatories placed in strategic locations in Europe, from the North-East Atlantic, through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.

These observatories consist of platforms equipped with various sensors, placed along the water column and at the bottom of the sea, which measure, in real time, different biogeochemical and physical parameters. The data obtained are fundamental for studies on natural risks, climate change and marine ecosystems.
