IH and IPMA co-found the National Oceanographic Data Center

The National Oceanographic Data Center (UNDO) building project was recognized by the IOC/UNESCO as a support action for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. The actions are hierarchical in programs, projects, activities and contributions. The projects are set of activities developed at regional, national and local level to meet the challenges of the programme. The CNDO contributed to the challenge “Create a Digital Representation of the Ocean” and thus help to get the ocean we all want.

Application for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 - 2030 took place under invitation 04/2022. After a long evaluation process, the CNDO project deserved recognition of its merit, announced on June 8, 2023, on the occasion of World Ocean Day celebrations.

The National Oceanographic Data Center ( https://nodc-portugal.pt ) aspires to be a unique point of access to the marine data of the Portuguese sea and a network of agents who found their field of work at sea. It began its activities as a distributed model, with the Hydrographic Institute and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere as founding members, but with open arms for all who want to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient ocean.
