On 14 July 2016 a Cooperation Protocol was signed between the Mission Structure for the Extension of the Continental Platform (EMEPC) and the Hydrographic Institute (HI) at the headquarters of this Institute.

The purpose of this Agreement is to carry out scientific cruises in the context of the extension process of the continental shelf, using and enhancing the human, logistical and operational capabilities of both parties, within the scope of the Sciences and Technologies of the Sea.

The mission of the Mission Structure for the Extension of the Continental Platform (EMEPC) is to continue the extension process of the continental shelf with a view to its conclusion, as provided for in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, signed at Montego Bay on 10 December 1982.

The Hydrographic Institute (IH), a Navy body and state laboratory, has the task of ensuring research and technological development activities related to the sciences and techniques of the sea, with a view to their priority application in naval military operations, in particular in the areas of hydrography, hydrographic cartography, navigation security, oceanography and the defense of the marine environment.
