Hydrographic Institute celebrates “Hydrograph Day”

The Hydrographic Institute (HI) held, on 14 February 2014, a session included in the celebrations of the “Hydrograph Day”, where general officers, former hydrographers, as well as senior officers and technicians of the IH were present.

These celebrations began with the presentation of another product of the series "What is your Wave?", called "...in the Recreation Navigation", by the Technical Director of the IH, Captain Fragnate Freitas Gunner. The purpose of this new product is to support recreational navigation in planning and driving travel, in particular by selecting the routes best suited to its navigation, and can be found at http://www.hydrografico.pt/qual-e-a-tua-onda.php. For the entire national territory, predictions of maritime agitation (significant height, period and direction of the ripple) and the wind field to the surface of the sea (intensity and direction of the wind) are made available. This free access tool anticipates in five days the conditions of navigability between different national ports (Portugal Continental and Madeira and Azores Archipelagos).

An intervention was followed in the series of “IH Talks” by Commander Anjos Branco, who reported several episodes of his life as a hydrographer.

The book “Portuguese Hydrographic Ships” was also released. In this context Dr. Carlos Gomes presented the work, describing generally the main activities of each hydrographic ship.
