Hydrographic survey in Cape Verde: Ports of Barlavento
After the completion of the work in the ports of leeward*, on 2 March 2016, on Brava Island, it was necessary to wait for the availability of maritime transport, either to send the material to the Island of S. Vicente, or to the team to travel to the island of Fire for air connection to S. Vicente.
After arriving at the Island of S. Vicente, the team began local recognition. The material would arrive aboard the LIBERDADI ferry on March 4. Between March 4 and 7 the team carried out the top-hydrographic survey of Porto Novo on the Island of S. Antão, after which it returned to S. Vicente, where it remained until March 16 to perform a more extensive survey of the port of Mindelo.
Note that the framework of the surveys and the works carried out were described in the previous news.
From the constraints to the profitability of the studies, three factors must be highlighted:
The wind, as a rule moderate to strong, mainly during the afternoon. He's been out of commission for the last few days.
The logistical difficulty of travel, including the transport of material, especially in connection with the Fire and Brava Islands.
The need to carry out different probe systems facilities on each island on two vessels, one small and, as a rule, open-mouthed, for the survey of areas of very low depth and confined and, another, larger and cabined, for the survey of the remaining areas surveyed.
The afternoon wind of Porto Novo, the mountains, walkers and roads without account of the Island of S. Antão, the joy and morabeza of the Island of S. Vicente, well-known in Mindelo, cosmopolitan city with one of the most beautiful Atlantic doors, is in memory.
On the return to Lisbon, the Hydrographic Brigade thanks the Cape Verdean people for their sympathy and art of receiving, highlighting the logistical support and collaboration provided by AMPCV and ENAPOR, fundamental for the success of the mission.
