Scholarship of the Hydrographic Institute presents doctoral thesis

In the framework of the research work of the Doctoral Program developed by Dr. Vanessa Morgado, grantee of the Hydrographic Institute (IH), was made today, March 6, the presentation of the thesis “Objective assessment of microplastic contamination of environmental areas” to the Director-General of the IH, Rear Admiral Ramalho Marreiros.

This doctorate, funded by the University of Lisbon and made in partnership with the Chemistry and Pollution Division of the Marine Environment of the IH, took place from April 2019 to July 2023, having concluded the defense of the thesis with distinction and praise, on 15 February.

In this study, Dr. Vanessa presented the results obtained on the development of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of microplastic contamination in Portuguese estuarine and coastal areas, which allow, for the first time, the objective determination of levels and trends of this contamination of the marine environment. The results thus produced are potentially binding on the manager of this resource.
