Launch of drift buoys by NRP Sagres

Another buoy derived from the GDP - Global Drifter Program was launched by Sagres School Ship. During its navigation, NRP Sagres in cooperation with the Hydrographic Institute has already launched two derivative buoys that are contributing to the NOAA international programme. The first buoy was launched on 26 June 2023 the SW of the Madeira Archipelago and the second buoy was launched on 28 June 2023 the SW of the Canary Islands.

8 more buoys are scheduled to be launched during the NRP Sagres instruction trip.

The GDP programme aims to improve global numerical forecasts and monitor oceans and climate through the launch of drift buoys. The buoys transmit data, in real time, of surface water temperature, atmospheric pressure and position, allowing to study ocean currents.

Find out more about the program and track the data in real time through the link: https://www.aoml. noaa.gov/phod/gdp/. The identifier codes (WMO ID) of the buoys are as follows: 1301778, 1301781.
