iSphere floater collects data from Monica and Nelson storms

On March 27, the iSphere Metocean® float was recovered, which was launched on March 5 by the Hydrographic Institute aboard the NRP D. Carlos I, off Portimão.

For more than 20 days, the floater traveled the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, crossing the storms Monica and Nelson. For about 15 days he remained on the coast of Spain, off Huelva, and several attempts were made to recover, with the support of the Portuguese Navy and the National Maritime Authority in strict coordination with the Huelva Maritime Rescue (Spain). Finally, on March 27, 2024, the floater gave the coast in the region of Cadiz, where it was recovered by the local police.

This mission aims at the validation and calibration of surface current data measured by high-frequency radar systems (HF) operating along the southern coast of Portugal and Spain, integrated into the MONIZEE network.
