Centenary of the first International Hydrographic Conference
On June 21, the World Hydrography Day was celebrated. This day was set up by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of disseminating the relevance of the work of the International Hydrographic Organisation (OHI) and the hydrographic services of the Member States for the safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment.
This year also marks the 100 years of the first International Hydrographic Conference. This conference was attended by representatives from 24 countries, including Portugal, and a permanent body was set up, the International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB), with the aim of contributing to easier and safer navigation at world level and to improving charts and nautical documents. Later, in 1921, IHB became the International Hydrographic Organization.
Currently the Portuguese State is represented in OHI by the Hydrographic Institute, as a national hydrographic service.
To celebrate the 100 years of this conference, OHI recently released a video that we share here.
