First Lieutenant Gonçalves Tavares completed his Master in Physical Oceanography - 2020

First Lieutenant António Carlos Gonçalves Tavares completed his Master's Degree in Physical Oceanography on 25 September 2020. Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), located in Monterey, California, United States. The military completed the course with a rating of “Excellent Performance” awarded by a master's final average (GQPR - Graduate Quality Point Rating) of 4.0 values, on a scale between 0.0 and 4.0. As a final requirement of the course, First Lieutenant António Tavares also wrote a master's thesis entitled “Analysis of surface current patterns to the southwest of Lisbon using high-frequency radar data”, which won the award of “Outstanding Theses”.

During this 2-year course in Oceanography Physics at the NPS were taught 27 disciplines focused on the dynamics of the ocean, underwater acoustics, and analysis/prediction of meteoceanographic conditions, to ensure that the military will be able to support the fleet in all aspects of operations at sea.

The master's thesis developed by First Lieutenant António Tavares used surface current data collected by high frequency radars installed in the Lisbon region, by the Hydrographic Institute in 2013.

The results presented in this master's thesis once again demonstrated the relevance of these measuring systems (high frequency gauges) and allowed for the first time a detailed characterization of the seasonal patterns of maritime currents in this region, whose results can be used in various operational and scientific areas, such as support for marine search and rescue operations, or in response to accidental spills of pollutants.

1TEN Tavares now has a period of 6 months to complete its internship program so that it is awarded the degree of “Hydrograph Engineer” which will allow it to join the Oceanography Division team.
