End of the geophysical survey campaign between Sagres and Albufeira

After 2 and a half weeks of geophysical surveys, on board the NRP waterboat “Andromeda”, 67 seismic reflection lines have been acquired, totaling more than 600 km of records. These profiles, of high scientific value, have very peculiar geological aspects, and it has already been possible to delimit sedimentary basins generated in different geological contexts.

The variability found in the sedimentary coverage that characterizes the Portuguese continental margin is the object of the SEDMAR program (undernamed “Maping of marine sediments”) and reinforces the urgent need to, with a multidisciplinary approach, characterize and understand the evolution of dynamic processes that affect the seabed.

The mission ends this Friday, ending with obvious success the acquisition of seismic reflection data between Sagres and Albufeira. The ship will prepare for another mission, with other objectives, another technical team and elsewhere on the Portuguese margin, while geologists will now continue in office to process and interpret the data acquired.
