Doctoral Thesis held at the Hydrographic Institute
Dr. Viviana Belvisi recently defended her PhD thesis at the Hydrographic Institute.
As part of the Doctoral Research Program in Geology, Dr. Viviana Belvisi defended her thesis, by videoconferencing, at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, entitled "Sedimentary dynamics on the southern island shelf of Madeira Island: insights from geophysical and sediment sampling data". This doctorate, funded by a grant from the Foundation for Science and Technology and developed in partnership with the Division of Marine Geology of the Hydrographic Institute (IH), where it was guided by Assistant Investigator Rui Quartau, began in February 2019 and was completed in March 2024. The candidate obtained a doctorate degree with distinction on July 24.
During the defense, Dr. Viviana Belvisi presented the results of her investigation into sedimentary dynamics on the southern platform of Madeira Island, providing a better understanding of sedimentary transport in that region. The results obtained are of great interest for the management of sand exploration and for the definition of anthropic constructions, such as aquaculture platforms and deployment of submarine cables.
