Director of the IH School of Hydrography and Oceanography selected for IBSC member

The Captain-mar-e-war Leonel Pereira Manteigas, Director of the Hydrography and Oceanography School (EHO) of the Hydrographic Institute was selected to be proposed by the International Hydrographic Organization (OHI) to its Member States, to fill a place of OHI in the International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartooners (IBSC).

The IBSC is a working group consisting of ten experts of recognized merit, four of the International Hydrographic Organization, four of the International Geometric Federation and two of the International Cartographic Association. With one of OHI’s seats vacant, Member States were invited to indicate candidates. Five applications were submitted from different countries. After examining the respective Curriculum Vitae and considering the criteria for selection and qualifications established, the IHI Secretariat and the President of the IBSC unanimously agreed to recommend to the Member States the selection of Commander Leonel Pereira Manteigas. In accordance with the rules, this selection will be approved within one month unless any objection is raised by any of the Member States.

This selection arose after the presentation to the IBSC, with high success of two processes of recognition of EHO Hydrography Courses, one with category A, in 2017 and another with category B, in 2018. The quality of the processes presented led the Colombian Hydrographic Service to request advice from the School of Hydrography and Oceanography in the process of recognizing its courses.

With this selection Commander Pereira Manteigas, if no objection arises, will not only actively participate in the review of the respective regulations, but also be one of the 10 elements of the IBSC that will carry out the analysis of the courses of hydrography and nautical cartography that, internationally, will be proposed for recognition, or for renewal of its recognition.

This candidacy and consequent selection is part of the intention of the Hydrographic Institute to have an increasingly active participation in the International Hydrographic Organization.
