Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute visit Angola

Luanda, Angola, the Director General of the Hydrographic Institute, Rear Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares, accompanied by Technical Director, Commander Miguel Bessa Pacheco. The visit, carried out from 6 to 9 December, took place simultaneously with the presence of the NRP “D.Carlos I” in that port, on mission under the initiative “Open Sea 2021”, where it carried out hydrographic work in the approaches to the port of Luanda.

The Rear Admiral Ventura Soares, after received by the Ambassador of Portugal in Angola, Pedro Pessoa and Costa, had the opportunity to visit the Angolan War Navy (MGA) in its hydrographic aspect (Direct of Hydrography and Navigation), where, after giving a lecture, awarded diplomas and imposed the specialization badges to the five Angolan officers who attended the Technical Course of Hydrography (category B of OHI) at the School of Hydrography and Oceanography of the IH. He also visited the Interministerial Commission for the Demarcation and Demarcation of Angola’s Maritime Spaces (CIDDEMA), following his earlier collaboration, and gave a lecture on the occasion to a wide audience. This visit to Luanda resulted in the signing of a protocol of collaboration between the IH and the Hydrographic Institute and the Maritime Signaling ofAngola, IHSMA, in the framework of the development of common actions in the maritime spaces under Angola’s sovereignty or jurisdiction, performed in the presence of State Secretary for the Civil Aviation, Maritime and Port Sector of Angola, Dr. Carlos Borges. It also resulted in the signing of another protocol for collaboration in the fields of hydrography, oceanography, marine geology and marine chemistry between the IH and the National Institute of Fisheries and Marine Research (INIPM), in the presence of the Angolan Executive Secretary of State for Fisheries, Professor HopeedCosta.

The IH's commitment to maritime safety and marine sciences in Angola, in close collaboration with GMA, CIDDEMA, IHSMA and INIPM, has enormous leverage potential in these areas of knowledge, and this Institute and the Navy are deeply committed to achieving concrete goals in the short, medium and long term. The hydrographic survey carried out in Luanda Bay, which will allow the update of the nautical chart of Angola's main port in 2022, and the buoy ondographer founded at the entrance of Luanda Bay, with real-time information on maritime agitation and water temperature, are two examples that show that “we are together” with Angola in this cooperation that is now reinforced.
