Death of Admiral Ribeiro Pacheco
The Navy and the Hydrographic Institute deeply regret the death of Admiral João José de Freitas Ribeiro Pacheco and send the most heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.
Admiral João Ribeiro Pacheco Director General of the Hydrographic Institute from May 9, 1989 to April 3, 1991 and Chief of Staff of the Navy from March 28, 1994 to April 1, 1997, with a brilliant career in service of the Navy.
He joined the Naval School in 1952 and throughout his career performed several functions at sea and on land. He commanded the NRP “Canopus” and the NRP Admiral Magalhães Corrêa, specialized in Communications and Special Marine, and commanded Special Marines, in commission in Guinea, where he distinguished himself for his action in combat.
He was also Captain of the Ports of Cape Verde, commander of the Marine Corps, Superintendent of Personnel Services, Director of the National Defense Institute, among other positions.
Throughout his life, Admiral Ribeiro Pacheco has been awarded various decorations including the Order of the Tower and Sword, Medal of the War Cross, Military Order of Avis - Gran-Cruz, among others.
He died on February 27th, a victim of prolonged illness.
The present body mass takes place in the Chapel of St. Roque today, March 2 at 12 noon, then following the body to the crematorium of the High of St. John.
