IH Day
On September 27th, the Hydrographic Institute celebrated its 59th anniversary. It was a special day when several activities were promoted beyond the traditional ceremony of imposing decorations and giving souvenirs to older collaborators.
On this day, the Director General, Rear Admiral Carlos Ventura Soares, inaugurated an exhibition with the title “Measure Time, measure the World, measure the sea” patent in the exhibition room until October 24. This exhibition results from a special collaboration of the Portuguese Society of Mathematics.
The second initiative took place at the Duarte Pacheco Auditorium, where a Session for the Disclosure of Mathematics was held, with presentations by three guests disclosing this science. The first presentation “Mathematics, Navigations and Hydrography in the 16th century” was carried out by Doctor Bruno Almeida, the second “The genesis of scientific hydrography in Portugal” was given by the MGC RES Costa Canas and the third “The Mathematics, here and there” by Professor José Paulo Viana. There was also time for the exhibition of a small film of activities of the Hydrographic Institute where mathematics is used, not related to the Technical Direction (where it is required).
In the alignment of the program, follow the formal ceremony of imposing decorations and giving souvenirs to civil servants who complete 35 and 15 years of service. Naturally everything ended with the traditional lunch conviviality.
In a year's time we'll celebrate 60 years, we'll start preparing the big event.
