Specialization Course of Officers in Navigation
On 27 April 2017 the graduates of the Specialization Course of Officers in Navigation carried out an Expedited Hydrographic Survey (LHE). The LHE took place at the Arco Paço Dock and provided an excellent opportunity for the trainees to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the Maritime Cartography and Signing module.
A LHE intends, in a rapid manner and with the resources available on board, to assess the depths in a particular location, on which there is no top-hydrographic information or where, due to lack of confidence in the information available, navigation is not advised (after an earthquake or other natural catastrophe that has affected that site).
For the execution of this exercise, the students resorted to two different positioning systems, one by geonavigation based on position lines using sextant and the other by radiopositioning using a GNSS equipment. There were also certain depths using two different methods, namely the use of plumb wire and simple beam probe.
The Specialization Course of Officers in Navigation aims to enable graduates with technical and scientific knowledge to perform the functions of Officer Navigator and Head of the Navigation Service of the Naval Units of the Portuguese Navy
