Science of the Sea Conference

On 8 May, in collaboration with the Hydrographic Institute and the Naval Research Centre, the Naval School held the “Sciences of the Sea” conference for the academic and scientific community. 

This conference had the privilege of having as lecturers several renowned experts from the Universities of Lisbon, Aveiro and Azores, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, the Hydrographic Institute and the Naval School. 

Areas such as the investigation of physical oceanography and geology in the Portuguese EEZ or the Atlantic NE, the investigation of ocean-atmosphere interaction processes, the research of resources (mineral, biological and biochemical) in the Portuguese EEZ and continental platform, and the development and applications of sea science were addressed.

The Commander Freitas Gunner was moderator of panel 4 entitled “Development and applications of sea sciences”, and in this panel Commander Santos Martinho presented “Models of the ocean supporting operations”, and Commander Santos Fernandes presented “Coastal radars for acquisition of oceanographic information”

The initiative provided about two hundred participants, mostly students, knowledge and information on a set of topics of relevance in the scientific fields of research of the sciences of the sea, thus complementing the teaching of curricular units, motivating them to further formations or specializations in the subjects of science and the sea economy.
