Conclusion of CPLP 2nd Hydrography Conference

It ended on November 8, the CPLP 2nd Hydrography Conference organized by the Cape Verde Maritime and Port Institute, the Hydrographic Institute (HI) and the Executive Secretariat of CPLP with the support of the Board of Hydrography and Navigation of the Brazilian Navy.

The Conference held from 4 to 8 November, in Mindelo, Cape Verde, had about 60 participants. Twenty-four representatives from delegations from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Portugal were present. In a face-to-face and videoconferencing way, the event also featured participants from various institutions of the PALOP, of the OHI (International Hydrographic Organization), of the CP-COI-UNESCO (Portuguese Committee for the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission), the Atlantic Center, IALA-WWA (International Maritime Signing Association - World-Wide Academy) and IIC Tecnologies.

On the first day of the Conference, the book “The Measures of the Earth and the Sea of the CPLP” was presented by the author, Commander Miguel Bessa Pacheco. This work will make it possible, in a scientific way, to quantify the dimensions of the maritime jurisdictional areas of the CPLP.

During the week, in parallel with the Conference, a number of activities took place, including seminars on Maritime Safety Information, Hydrographic Surveys, Navigation Aids, Oceanography and Geophysics and S-100, taught by the IH, the Portugal Headlights and the DHN-Brazil (Direction of Hydrography and Navigation). There have also been visits to institutions, including the ISECMAR-Center for Maritime Simulation and the “Guardian” Ship.

Delegations from the participating countries made a progress report on the areas of hydrography, nautical mapping and navigation safety, indicating proposals and recommendations in those areas, establishing links for joint cooperation and exchange, as well as sharing information on hydrography in the CPLP.

All stakeholders reinforced the importance of Hydrography as a basis for knowledge, preservation and sustainable use of the Ocean, as well as the importance and growing interest of the Hydrography Conference for the CPLP countries.

The excellent organization, combined with the hospitality of the IMP-CV (Cape Verde Port Maritime Institute) in particular, and the Cape Verdeans in general, contributed greatly to the success of this great meeting.

The third edition of the CPLP Hydrography Conference is scheduled for 2026.
