The second phase of the mission “SEDMAR Continent / ADCP Search” is completed
On June 2, 2020, the second phase of the mission “SEDMAR Continente/Search ADCP” was completed on board the NRP “Auriga” after the objectives were achieved.
To the success of the mission, the exemplary collaboration provided by the ship's garrison to the technical team of the Hydrographic Institute (HI) contributed decisively, which allowed the execution of 124 harvesting maneuvers and the obtaining of 201 boxes with samples of surface sediments, representing 103 sites of the continental shelf between Cape Spichel and Ericeira.
In the execution of the mission, the IH technical team, headed by the TS Raquel Melo (Division of Marine Geology), integrated the CAB Nunes Batista (Hydrographic Brigade), until May 30, and the AO Rui Campo (Mari Instrumentation Center), after that date. The driver Ana Fernandes (Infrastructure and Transport Service), was always present at the various docks where the ship pulled over the land, ensured the rapid transport of the samples taken to the Hydrographic Base located in Azinheira, Seixal, where they were placed in the freezer.
These sediment samples will now be sent to the laboratories, where they will be analyzed and studied to update sedimentary cartography and evaluate how the marine environment has evolved in recent decades.
